American Mathematical Society Responds to OpenAI’s Mathematical Progress on the Navier–Stokes Problem
In response to the progress on the Navier–Stokes problem announced by OpenAI today, the American Mathematical Society (AMS) issued a statement celebrating this milestone while emphasizing that the achievement builds on the work of many human mathematicians who have contributed to the understanding and solution of the problem, rather than representing an isolated advance in artificial intelligence.
According to Ravi Vakil, President, and John Meier, Executive Director and CEO of the AMS:
“Today’s news about progress toward solving the Navier–Stokes problem, one of the great longstanding challenges in mathematics concerning the equations governing fluid flow, represents a remarkable advance in human knowledge. The story began with Navier, Stokes, Leray, and Ladyzhenskaya and continued with the recent advances of Córdoba and Martínez-Zoroa. It then moved forward—with the help of new technologies—with Alper and Buckmaster, followed by the final steps taken by the mathematicians at OpenAI. The goal of mathematics is human understanding, and this achievement and the process that led to it will be fruitful for a long time to come.”
