History

In March 1970, with the participation of about a hundred faculty members of universities, higher education institutes and first-rate teachers of mathematics, the first Iranian Mathematics Conference was held in Shiraz University. At this meeting, the proposal to establish the Iranian Mathematical Society was unanimously approved.

In March 1971, during the second Iranian Mathematics Conference at Sharif University of Technology, the Board of Trustees with approval of a constitution and election of six members for the Executive Council, announced the establishment of the Iranian Mathematical Society. The Executive Council at its first meeting on 13 April 1971 elected Professor Mehdi Behzad as secretary (president) of IMS and tasked  him with formation of an organizational structure and official registration of the society and with his efforts IMS was registered in the same year in the Office for Registration of  Companies and Industrial Properties (entry 1258) for an indefinite period of time with the aim of expanding and developing mathematics in Iran. IMS was so well received among Iranian mathematicians that in a short period of time, a vast majority of mathematics faculty members of universities and other higher education institutions became members of IMS. From that point on, IMS has been able to take some concrete steps to expand its activities and achieve parts of its goals.

Goals

The Iranian Mathematical Society was formed in order to expand and promote mathematical knowledge and culture and to improve education and research in various fields and levels of mathematical sciences.
